Medtronic Insights & FDC3 Dashboard Design
This case study includes two different dashboards for the same client - the first was to redesign the old insights dashboard solely monitored by the Executives at Medtronic. And the second dashboard was designed to monitor the detailed daily, weekly and quarterly business and regional revenue of the client.

OVERVIEW
Medtronic is a global producer of medical devices and therapies, such as insulin pumps, pacemakers, and diabetes therapies. There are two parts to this case study. The first part was to design an Insights dashboard for the executives to monitor key business insights and metrics that enable their teams and leaders to deliver innovation and growth. Second, design an entirely revenue-based dashboard to monitor daily/weekly/quarterly revenue.
DURATION
8 months (Sept 2021- April 2022)
MY ROLE
As a UX Designer, I was responsible for conducting user research comprising user interviews, competitive analysis, designing persona, journey mapping, and initial low-fidelity wireframes for the MVP app. I also facilitated multiple stakeholder workshops for feature prioritization on the future state of the MVP (called "MVP+") app and documented "Moments that matter" based on the outcome from user persona and journey synthesis.

PART 01
INSIGHTS DASHBOARD
The PROBLEM
Before bringing in the UX team, Medtronic's Product Owner and Deloitte's engineering team designed and developed the initial wireframes for the Insights dashboard.
However, Medtronic's business and operating unit executives realized that the dashboard was missing the user-experience element, and the overall look and feel needed some rework.
The SOLUTION
Power BI Dashboard with an enhanced user experience, better navigation, and a new look and feel.
HOW did we land to the solution?
1️⃣
GATHER REQUIREMENTS
The thumb rule to start any project at Deloitte is to always start with gathering and researching all the necessary information about the client and their requirement. So, I started interacting with the product owner/manager on the client side to nail down the must-haves and figure out any wiggle room for the design changes. Of course, updating the dashboard's look and feel was the most critical requirement. Still, the client also wanted to explore the option of quick fixes to avoid delays in the dashboard development.
I also drafted general questions to understand how the data is captured and what immediate enhancements were needed for their dashboard. Below are a few questions that assisted our team in comprehending their current style of reporting business decisions --
-
Tell us about the current data reporting docs that you rely on, are visualizations helpful for you, or do you prefer to see numerical data?
-
Who drives the creation of the report documents or visualization?
-
How frequently is the reporting document used?
-
Where do you get the reports from, especially when it involves various teams and different departments?
-
Are there any pressing financial reporting question that needs to be addressed daily/ weekly?
-
What business decisions were made based on the insight?
-
When you look at a weekly report, do you read through everything or scan through the summary? What’s the most interesting part for you?
-
Who are some of the people you currently rely on for gathering information?
-
Who are the primary consumers of your reporting and analytics activities?
2️⃣
EVALUATED CURRENT-STATE DESIGNS
We started with evaluating the current-state design (aka previous-state) to figure out what isn't working and how can the designs be improved to streamline and simplify the user experience of the dashboard as requested by the client.

I summarized some high-level problematic points on the current-state of the Insights dashboard.
Increased Cognitive Load
Executive summary screen includes the KPIs of all the level 2 dashboards
Unstandardized Approach for Navigation
Global filters and direct access to different level 2 dashboards are hidden in the hamburger menu.
Potential Redundancy
Purpose of features like "Highlight/Key changes" aren't defined clearly on the dashboard making them redundant.
Perplexed Visualizations/ Charts
Current scale on the visualizations includes large amounts of data which may lead to confusions.
Lack of Design Standardization
There is a lack of design standardization throughout the dashboard.
3️⃣
DESIGN RECOMMENDATION OVERVIEW
After accessing the current-state dashboard and multiple design sessions with the internal team, our team landed up with the initial design recommendations for the dashboard design.
We bucketed our design recommendations in five different themes --

4️⃣
PROPOSED DESIGNS
Working alongside cross-functional partners from the design, engineering, and strategy teams, I evaluated existing paradigms and crafted the first draft for the insights dashboard. Centered on clarity, the feature breaks down factors into trustworthy visualization and analysis, offering users a clearer look at their financial health.
Executive View
Easily and Quickly navigate to Level-2 views

Cleaner look to understand KPIs
Drill-down View
Vertically aligned KPIs to easily compare with the visuals

Easy access to global filters throughout the dashboard
Proposed new visuals to represent the data more effectively
HOWEVER, the proposed designs were amended!!
Although the team addressed most of the pain points and delivered a solution apt for the insights dashboard. However, the client insisted on using a specific layout designed by their global supply chain team for their dashboard and wanted to inherit the same look and feel for the insights dashboard. Hence, they were hesitant to use the layout suggested by our team.
Secondly, the product owner also wanted to adhere to the launch date. Hence, we prioritized the must-haves for the initial sprint release and planned out the design changes for the future releases.

PART 02
FDC3 REVENUE DASHBOARD
The PROBLEM
The Medtronic Revenue team used PDF reports to document their daily/weekly/quarterly revenue data in a tabular format making these reports huge, complex, and formidable to manage. Additionally, it was super challenging to filter down data of specific business and region-led groups.
The difficulty in understanding the reports would sometimes lead to poor decision-making by the executives.
The GOAL
-
Transform the complex PDF reports to an easy-to-read dashboard with simple data visuals/charts
-
Simple navigation in-between the reports
-
Quick and easily accessible filtering option
-
Utilizing the Insights dashboard design system for the revenue dashboard
-
Mobile friendly dashboard for quicker access to the reports
The PROCESS
Our team comprising of product managers, powerBI lead, and developers kicked off the project by organizing design thinking sessions with the stakeholders to understand their requirements for the daily and weekly revenue reports for different businesses and region-led operations.
After the initial whiteboarding sessions, I devised the Lo-Fi wireframes to brainstorm different ways of visualizing data for the dashboard and understand stakeholders' perspectives. I also performed real-time iterations on the designs to make the design session more interactive with the stakeholders and get as much feedback as possible.

Next, I designed the Hi-Fi wireframes using the same design system I used for the Insights dashboard. However, the visuals for the FDC3 dashboard were iterated multiple times before the launch date due to some development constraints.
